the top harriers at Fairfield University,
Benjamin Heslin joins the Stags coach-
ing staff for the 2011 campaign.
Heslin, native of Berlin, Conn., was a three-
year team captain for the Stags. He had a strong senior campaign, run-

Championships.
Heslin, who graduated last May with a degree in accounting, was
named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic

Assistant Coach – Second Season
J
ack Maloney joins the Fairfield University
cross country program for his first sea-
son, bringing with him more than 30
years of coaching experience.
Maloney spent three years as an assis-
tant coach for the track and field program at Fordham University. Prior
to his arrival at Fordham, Maloney spent more than 25 years at
Southern Connecticut State University, including 11 as the men's head
coach. During that time, he led the Owls to 14 consecutive Northeast-
10 Conference track and field championships - seven indoors and
seven outdoors.
After serving as an assistant coach at SCSU for 17 seasons,
Maloney succeeded Wil Wright in 1998 as head coach. He was named
both Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Northeast-10
Conference Coach of the Year on 12 occasions. He coached a total of
76 All-Americans, including 60 as head coach. Furthermore, 16 school
records were broken during Maloney's tenure as head coach. The Owls
placed in the top-10 at the New England Championships a total of 14
times (seven times indoor and seven times outdoor), including five
top-three finishes at the Indoor Championships.
During the 2008-09 cross country season, SCSU was nationally
ranked throughout the entire season and finished third at the NCAA
Regionals. The Owls then maintained their reign of dominance during
track season, as they won both the Northeast-10 Indoor and Outdoor
Track and Field Championships that year. Maloney was named as
Conference Coach of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor sea-
sons, while also taking home United States Track and Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Northeast Region Coach of
the Year accolades during both campaigns. On the team front, the
Owls placed as high as 10th at the NCAA Championships under
Maloney - with that coming outdoors in 2001.
During his time as an assistant coach, Maloney coached 16 All-
Americans and was named the Division II New England Coach of the
Year in 1988. He remains the only coach ever selected to that honor
while in an assistant coach capacity.
