NCAA Tournament Appearances
1997 Postseason Bid
The Stags earned its first-ever MAAC Tournament Championship
and NCAA Tournament bid in 1997. Marching through the MAAC
regular season with a 9-0 record, gave Fairfield the number one
seed in the MAAC Tournament. The first round of The MAAC
Tournament featured the Stags disposing of Siena by a score of 15-
13, 15-10, 15-9. The conference final was a showdown with St.
Peter’s. Fairfield prevailed by a score of 15-6, 15-6, 15-4. Winning
the MAAC advanced the Stags to the NCAA Tournament, where they
were matched up against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Lack of post-
season experience was prevalent, as the Stags fell 2-15, 2-15, 8-
15. Despite the loss, the Stags had the most successful season in
school history to date, with a 25-10 record.
1998 Postseason Bid
For the second consecutive year, the Stags won the MAAC
Tournament Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament
berth. The Stags ran off a MAAC record 27 straight wins, and ended
the season with a 35-2 record. Once again, the Stags clinched the
MAAC regular season crown with a 9-0 record. All it took was four
matches for the Stags to dispose of the MAAC competition, earning
the MAAC Championship. The first-round of the NCAA Tournament
was held at Penn State University, where the Stags fell to Clemson
3-0. Fairfield continued their rise to prominence, finishing the sea-
son with a number 24 ranking in the RPI rankings.
1999 Postseason Bid
The Stags raced through the MAAC regular season and Tournament
to earn their third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. 1999 saw
the Stags finish with a 30-4 record, which included winning streaks
of 12 and 18 games. Once again, they ran through the MAAC com-
petition in the regular season, earning a 9-0 record. They defeated
St. Peter’s by a score of 15-5, 15-17, 15-5, 15-10, to be crowned
the MAAC Tournament champion. From there they went to the NCAA
Tournament, which was held at Pacific University in Stockton, Calif.
The Stags fell to the University of Michigan by a score of 15-8, 15-
7, 15-7. Despite the loss, the season ended on a happy note when
the Stags received an RPI of 32.
2000 Postseason Bid
A dynasty was brewing as the Stags once again took home the
MAAC Tournament title and earned yet another NCAA Tournament
berth, for the fourth straight year. The Stags completed another per-
fect season in the MAAC, winning all 11 of their conference match-
es by a combined score of 33-1. When it came time for the NCAA
Tournament, the Stags were shipped all the way out to California,
for a match-up with the host Pepperdine. Fairfield experienced an
NCAA first, as they were able to win a game, 16-14, against the
Waves. They nearly picked up another game, but dropped the fourth
one 17-15. Once again, the Stags won over 20 matches, compiling
a 26-7 overall record.
2001 Postseason Bid
For the first time since 1996, the Stags lost a regular season match
in the MAAC. The loss came to St. Peter’s, who ended up taking the
regular season crown. Fairfield finished in second place, and was
given the number two seed in the MAAC Tournament. They ended
up avenging their regular season loss in the MAAC Championship
match, when they defeated St. Peter’s by a score of 30-26, 30-24,
25-30, 30-18. For the fifth consecutive year, the Stags were a part
of the NCAA Tournament. They traveled to Penn State University,
where they squared off against the host Nittany Lions. The Stags
fought hard but fell by a score of 30-21, 30-24, 30-24. Fairfield
ended the season with a record of 19-13.
