FAIRFIELD IN THE WNIT
Fairfield made its second-ever WNIT appearance and the first since 2000 when they faced
Drexel University on March 15. The Stags hosted their first-ever WNIT game at Alumni Hall
where they were tipped by the Dragons, 57-41, to end the season.
Fairfield earned a berth in the 2000 WNIT after winning a MAAC Regular Season crown,
but falling in the MAAC Championship Final to St. Peter’s College, 61-46.
HOW THEY CLINCHED IT
The Stags clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Basketball Championship with their victory at
Canisius College on February 19. With their loss to Marist College in the MAAC Championship
Final, the Stags received the league’s automatic bid to the WNIT as the highest remaining
team in the MAAC regular season standings.
NATIONAL NOTICE
Fairfield finished the year ranked fifth nationally in
scoring defense, allowing 52.0 points per game.
Fairfield ranked 18th in the nation in turnovers per
game, committing just 13.9 per contest. The Stags were
ranked as high as eighth in the category (January 18 –
13.4/
g).
Sophomore Alexys Vazquez was the national leader in
three-point field goal percentage for nearly the entire
month of February and the beginning of March. Vazquez
shot 42.7 percent (61-for-143) from long range, but dropped out of the rankings because she
didn’t meet the 2.0 three-point field goals made per game requirement; Vazquez averaged
1.9.
Fairfield finished the year with an RPI of 104. The Stags were ranked as high as 94th
(
March 5).
SINGLE SEASON RECORDS SET
Sophomore Alexys Vazquez set Fairfield’s single season record for three-point field goal
percentage by shooting 42.7 percent.
Junior Katelyn Linney set the single season standard for three-point field goals attempted
with 242 in 2011-12
The Stags combined to make 192 three-pointers to set the single season record while also
setting the record for three-pointers attempted with 601.
MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Fairfield opened the MAAC Championships with a 61-45 victory over No. 7 Iona College in
the quarterfinals. Taryn Johnson led the way with 19 points while Katelyn Linney had 11 points
and Brittany MacFarlane had 10 points. The Stags shot 46.9 percent from the floor.
The Stags continued their hot shooting in the semifinals, connecting on 51.1 percent of
their shots to drop No. 6 Siena College, 63-48. Katelyn Linney had 20 points while Desiree
Pina netted 14 points.
In the MAAC Championship Final, top-seeded Marist College halted the Stags’ run with a
61-35
victory. No Stag scored in double digits, which was the first time since 2010 in which
that occurred.
MAAC ACCOLADES
Senior Taryn Johnson earned All-MAAC First Team accolades for the second consecutive
season. Johnson, a Preseason MAAC All-First Team pick this year, averaged 12.7 points and
7.6
rebounds. Offensively, the forward posted nine double-doubles this season and scored in
double figures in 25 of her 32 games played. She also led the MAAC in blocks (1.8/g) and
field goal percentage (.546).
Senior Desiree Pina earned All-MAAC Second Team honors for the second consecutive
year and was a postseason award winner in each of her four seasons with the Stags. Pina was
second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game. She led the Stags with 112
assists (3.5/g) and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.7. The point guard was the Stags work-
horse, averaging 37.4 minutes per game to lead the conference. She played all 40 minutes in
nine games this season.
