Meet theStaff
Mark Spellman is in his 12th year
as the Director of Strength and
Conditioning at Fairfield University,
assuming
the
position
in
September 2001. In that role he
develops, designs and implements
comprehensive strength and condi-
tioning programs for all 20 varsity
teams and 400 student-athletes. Spellman also oversees the
day-to-day operations of the 4,700-square foot strength and
conditioning facility in the Walsh Athletic Center.
Spellman earned a B.S. in Physical Education and an M.S. in
Human Performance at Frostburg State University. As an
undergraduate he earned four varsity letters as a member of
the swimming and diving team. He is a Certified Strength and
Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and
Conditioning Association.
Spellman, who interned in 1995 for the Washington Redskins
and in 1998, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, came to Fairfield
from Villanova University. He spent two years as the assistant
strength and conditioning coach at the Philadelphia, Pa., insti-
tution.
A native of Washington, D.C., Spellman, and his wife, Kelly,
reside in Stratford, Conn., with their children, Emily (8), Drew
(6) and Patrick (3).

Scott Atkin is in the third year of his
second stint at Fairfield University
in his capacity as Assistant Director
of Sports Medicine. The 2012 sea-
son will be his first as the primary
athletic trainer for the women’s soc-
cer team, a role he also serves for
the men’s and women’s golf pro-
grams and men’s lacrosse team.
Atkin first came to Fairfield in 2006 and spent two seasons as
a graduate assistant athletic trainer. During that time he
worked with the Stags men’s soccer, men’s and women’s
swimming and diving and women’s lacrosse teams. For the
past two years, Atkin has been the primary sports medicine
contact for Fairfield women’s basketball, men’s and women’s
cross country and softball.
After completing his first stint at Fairfield, Atkin moved to an
assistant athletic training position at the University of New
Haven. In that position he provided primary medical coverage
for the Chargers women’s soccer, men’s basketball and
women’s lacrosse teams.
Atkin earned his B.S. in Athletic Training from Marist College in
2006 and went on to earn his M.S. in Human Performance at
Southern Connecticut State University in 2009. He is a mem-
ber of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and in
2009 earned his NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist Certification.
A native and resident of Shelton, Conn., Atkin was a four-year
member of the Marist swimming and diving team, competing in
the sprint freestyle events. While at the Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
school, Atkin worked with local high schools, covering sports
such as field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. In the summer
of 2004 he volunteered as a member of the Empire State
Games Sports Medicine Staff, covering rugby. Aktin also
worked the 2003 and 2005 Special Olympics.
