Joey Civico begins his second season as an assistant coach with the
Fairfield University field hockey team after spending time as a volunteer
assistant. He adds a great deal of experience both as a coach and as a
player in the international arena.
Currently, he is completing his Level 3 hockey coaching certification
as accredited by England Hockey. He holds a Hockey Goalkeeper
Coaching Bronze award which is also accredited by England Hockey, a
designation less than 50 people in the world hold.
He served as Wapping 1s men’s head coach from March 2009
through July 2010 and guided the program to their most successful sea-
son ever. The team was promoted to East Premier League A with a 19-
game winning streak during his tenure. He coached players that went on
to represent England, Ireland, Turkey, and South Africa at other interna-
tional competition. He was charged with all aspects of the team includ-
ing offensive and defensive structure, conditioning, and team selection.
Civico also coached the St. George’s University of London women’s
team from October 2009 to March 2010. His responsibilities included
implementing training sessions for players who ranged from beginners
to England internationals. He also ran specific goalkeeper-based ses-
sions for the club.
His coaching resume includes several campaigns as head coach of
Wapping 2s men where he compiled an impressive 31-4 record.
Wapping was promoted as league champions in 2007 and 2008.
Civico also gained game experience as a player with University of
Leeds, Belamadena Hockey Club (Spain), and Sheffield University
Bankers Hockey Club. He played more than 15 years with those clubs,
spending 10 years with Sheffield University (1989-99), three years with
University of Leeds (2000-03), and one year with Belamadena (2003-
04).
With Leeds, he played in the BUSA Premier League, where he was
the team’s top scorer for the 2002-03 season. By the end of his tenure,
Leeds was established as one of the top eight university teams in the
country. With the Sheffield University club team, Civico was named the
Under-16 and the Under-18 player of the season. He was named the
club’s Under-21 player of the season, the youngest player to win that dis-
tinction. He was the team’s top scorer in 1997.
